Fred Harteis News - Don Wilson:  I once read that there is no better test of a man’s integrity than his behavior when he is wrong.  With that standard, this story of John Gedge is a testament to his integrity.

A very unusual letter was received by the traffic bureau in one Pennsylvania City. Officials in Philadelphia were astonished to receive a letter and a payment from a motorist who had been given a speeding ticket more than 50 years earlier. The date on the traffic citation was 1954.  It turns out that Mr. John Gedge, an English tourist had been visiting the ‘City of Brotherly Love when he was cited for speeding. The penalty in those days was only $15. Gedge forgot about the ticket for almost 52 years until he discovered the original document in an old coat.

When asked about his unusual actions, Gedge age 84, now living in a nursing home in East Sussex replied, I thought “I’ve got to pay it. Englishmen pay their debts. My conscience is clear.”

Don Wilson, Thomas Jefferson would have agreed with Mr. Gedge. Jefferson said “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.
