Fred Harteis News - Don Wilson, “Few presidents are as well memorialized as our first one, George Washington. The Washington Monument’s primary purpose was to help us remember Washington’s unselfish devotion to America and to principal. An additional lesson of the man and the monument is the importance of persistence in a worthwhile cause. After Washington’s death Congress started “talking about it” but many years passed before action was taken. Some things related to politics remain unchanged from the 1800s”

The Washington Monument, built at intervals between 1848 and 1885 with funds from public subscriptions and Federal appropriations. The original design was created by architect Robert Mills; but his original plan was altered over the building and fund raising years.
A major visitor attraction, one can see the entire city of Washington D.C., plus parts of the surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland from the top of the 555-foot monument. Monument construction costs exceeded: $1,187,710. The walls are over 15 feet thick at the base and about 1.5 feet at the top. The sway of the monument in a 30-mile per-hour wind is reported to be 0.125 of an inch.
